Does T-Mobile work in Mexico?

Yes. T-Mobile says Mexico is included with almost all of its plans, with no setup. What changes is the high-speed data: 30GB on Experience Beyond, 15GB on Experience More, and none on Essentials, which gets data at up to 128kbps.

You probably don't need an eSIM if

  • You're on Experience Beyond (30GB high-speed in Mexico) or Experience More (15GB), and that covers your trip.
  • You're on Go5G (10GB) or Magenta, MAX, ONE or Plus (5GB) and use less than that.

A travel eSIM helps if

  • You're on Essentials or Essentials Saver: data in Mexico runs at up to 128kbps, which is slow for maps and photos.
  • You're on T-Mobile Prepaid: T-Mobile says there's no international data roaming for prepaid.
  • You'll use more than your plan's Mexico allowance, for example with a hotspot.

Good to know before you go

  • No setup for the included Mexico benefit: “Your phone works the moment you arrive.”
  • Your phone must register on T-Mobile's US network before you use it abroad.
  • “Not for extended international use; you must reside in the U.S. and primary usage must occur on our network.” T-Mobile gives no number of days.
  • Calling Mexico from the US is free on its plans.

When you do want an eSIM

RoamClean's Mexico eSIM runs on the Telcel and AT&T networks. Data only, the days start when you connect in Mexico, and a never-installed eSIM is refunded to your card.

Using one with your T-Mobile line? Keep T-Mobile on for calls and texts and turn data roaming off on it, so it can't use data in Mexico. How. Visitors on a travel eSIM don't need to register it in Mexico today; see the registry guide.

Quick Compatibility Check

Two checks before you buy:

1Your phone supports eSIM

Apple iPhone: iPhone XS, XR and later, including SE (3rd gen). SE (2nd gen): Apple's pages disagree, so check for an EID. Most iPhones from China mainland don't support eSIM.
Samsung Galaxy: S20 series and newer, Z Fold and Z Flip models, and some A models depending on region. Google Pixel: Pixel 4 and newer, and some Pixel 3 and 3a models.
Any phone: if Settings shows an “EID” (iPhone: General > About; Pixel: About phone > SIM status), your phone supports eSIM.

2Your phone is unlocked

iPhone, 10 seconds: Settings > General > About > Carrier Lock should say “No SIM restrictions”. A locked iPhone stops at “eSIM Not Supported”.
Android: Samsung shows it under Connections > More connection settings. Pixel or another phone from a carrier: check with your carrier.
