Does AT&T work in Mexico?

Yes. On AT&T's current unlimited plans (Value, Extra, Premium and Elite 2.0), Mexico is part of the plan's own coverage area, so your talk, text and data work there at no extra charge. AT&T's terms add that “2G off net data speeds may apply.”

You probably don't need an eSIM if

  • You're on Extra, Premium or Elite 2.0: your plan's data works in Mexico as it does at home.
  • You're on Value 2.0 and won't pass 5GB of high-speed data this month, counting your US use too.
  • You're on AT&T Prepaid's $45 or $60 plan, which include unlimited data in the US and Mexico.

A travel eSIM helps if

  • You're on AT&T Prepaid's $35 Unlimited Saver plan, which doesn't include Mexico.
  • You're on Value 2.0 and expect to use more than 5GB in the month.
  • You're on an older Unlimited Starter or Unlimited Extra plan and myAT&T doesn't show Mexico data.
  • You keep landing on slow 2G roaming where you're staying and want a local network.

Good to know before you go

  • No setup: “When you get there, your phone just works.” Data roaming must be on in your phone's settings.
  • AT&T says it has no 50/50 rule for Mexico, but its terms say service is “intended for use primarily within” the US.
  • “2G off net data speeds may apply” in Mexico. AT&T's travel guide lists 2G to 5G there, with 5G in select locations.
  • Calling Mexico from the US adds no cost to its plans.

Using one with your AT&T line? Keep AT&T on for calls and texts and turn data roaming off on it, so it can't use data in Mexico. How. Visitors on a travel eSIM don't need to register it in Mexico today; see the registry guide.

Quick Compatibility Check

Two checks before you buy:

1Your phone supports eSIM

Apple iPhone: iPhone XS, XR and later, including SE (3rd gen). SE (2nd gen): Apple's pages disagree, so check for an EID. Most iPhones from China mainland don't support eSIM.
Samsung Galaxy: S20 series and newer, Z Fold and Z Flip models, and some A models depending on region. Google Pixel: Pixel 4 and newer, and some Pixel 3 and 3a models.
Any phone: if Settings shows an “EID” (iPhone: General > About; Pixel: About phone > SIM status), your phone supports eSIM.

2Your phone is unlocked

iPhone, 10 seconds: Settings > General > About > Carrier Lock should say “No SIM restrictions”. A locked iPhone stops at “eSIM Not Supported”.
Android: Samsung shows it under Connections > More connection settings. Pixel or another phone from a carrier: check with your carrier.
