Does my phone support eSIM?

Two checks before you buy: your phone has eSIM, and it isn't locked to a carrier. Each takes seconds.

Step 1: does it have eSIM? Look for an EID

An EID is your phone's eSIM number. If Settings shows one, your phone has eSIM.

  1. 1

    iPhone

Settings > General > About. Scroll down to EID.
  2. 2

    Google Pixel

Settings > About phone > SIM status. Look for EID.
  3. 3

    Samsung Galaxy

Settings > Connections > SIM manager. If you see Add eSIM, that's where you'd install it.
  4. 4

iPhone XS, Pixel 4, Galaxy S20 or later?

Those all have eSIM, with a few exceptions listed below.

Step 2: is it unlocked?

A phone locked to its carrier rejects every other carrier's eSIM, ours included. On iPhone, installing stops at “eSIM Not Supported”. This is the most common reason an eSIM won't install.

  1. 1

    iPhone (10 seconds)

Settings > General > About > Carrier Lock should say “No SIM restrictions”. More
  2. 2

    Samsung Galaxy

Settings > Connections > More connection settings > Network unlock (on newer models, Network lock status).
  3. 3

    Google Pixel

Settings has no lock check. Google: “All phones in the Google Store come unlocked.” Bought from a carrier? Check with that carrier.
  4. 4

    Any phone from a carrier

Your carrier account shows it: AT&T says “Device unlocked” in your device info, and T-Mobile shows the unlock status in your T-Mobile account. Or ask your carrier.

Locked? How the major US carriers unlock phones

AT&T

Phones bought more than 60 days ago and paid in full, on an account that isn't past due. Eligible iPhone, Samsung and Pixel phones should unlock by themselves; if yours hasn't, send an unlock request. Prepaid: after 12 months of paid service.

Verizon

Unlocked automatically once the phone is paid in full (35 days later if you paid with a Verizon gift card). Prepaid: unlocked automatically after 365 days of paid, active service.

T-Mobile

After 40 days active on the line, with the phone paid in full and the account in good standing. Prepaid: after 365 days, or sooner with more than $100 of refills. T-Mobile unlocks eligible phones within two business days.

Only your carrier can unlock your phone, and it can take a few days. Ask before you buy an eSIM.

Models

iPhone

iPhone XS, XS Max, XR and later, including iPhone SE (3rd generation). Many iPhone 14 and later models sold in the US are eSIM only. iPhone SE (2nd generation): Apple's pages disagree, so check for an EID.

Google Pixel

Pixel 4 and later all work. Pixel 3a works unless bought with Verizon service or in Japan. Pixel 3 works only if bought with Sprint or Google Fi service, and not if bought in Australia, Taiwan or Japan.

Samsung Galaxy

Galaxy S20 series and later (including FE models), Z Fold and Z Flip models, and some recent A and XCover models depending on region. Samsung: support depends on the country the phone is from.

Exceptions to know before you buy

  • iPhone SE (2nd generation): Apple's Dual SIM guide lists it with eSIM, but its SIM-type page lists it as nano-SIM only. Check Settings > General > About for an EID before you buy. Not sure which SE you have? Tap the part number next to Model Number: A2275, A2296 or A2298 is the 2nd generation; A2595, A2782, A2783, A2784 or A2785 is the 3rd.
  • iPhones bought in China mainland: Apple says only iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, iPhone 17e and iPhone Air from China mainland support eSIM.
  • iPhones bought in Hong Kong or Macao: some models use two physical SIM cards instead of eSIM. Check for an EID as above.
  • Phones from a carrier: a phone bought from a carrier can be locked to it. Google notes that “all phones in the Google Store come unlocked.”

Quick Compatibility Check

Two checks before you buy:

1Your phone supports eSIM

Apple iPhone: iPhone XS, XR and later, including SE (3rd gen). SE (2nd gen): Apple's pages disagree, so check for an EID. Most iPhones from China mainland don't support eSIM.
Samsung Galaxy: S20 series and newer, Z Fold and Z Flip models, and some A models depending on region. Google Pixel: Pixel 4 and newer, and some Pixel 3 and 3a models.
Any phone: if Settings shows an “EID” (iPhone: General > About; Pixel: About phone > SIM status), your phone supports eSIM.

2Your phone is unlocked

iPhone, 10 seconds: Settings > General > About > Carrier Lock should say “No SIM restrictions”. A locked iPhone stops at “eSIM Not Supported”.
Android: Samsung shows it under Connections > More connection settings. Pixel or another phone from a carrier: check with your carrier.
