Barcelona eSIM guide: El Prat airport, the beaches and MWC

What works for data in Barcelona: the Vodafone shop at El Prat and where it is, the metro and train to each terminal, shared 5G antennas on the city beaches, Mobile World Congress, ride apps and the trip to Montserrat.

Last checked October 14, 2026 · Sources and dates

RoamClean sells Spain eSIMs, and our plans are on this page. The facts about Barcelona come from the airport, carrier and transit pages listed under Sources, each with the date we read it. Where you may not need an eSIM at all, we say so.

The short answer

  • El Prat has one phone shop that sells SIM cards: Vodafone, in Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. Aena places both in the passenger-only zone, so check you can reach it before you count on it. (source)
  • Our Spain eSIM is data only and connects to Orange and Movistar. It works from the moment you land, before passport control.
  • On the beach: the 3.5 km of city beaches have shared 5G antennas, built for the 2024 America's Cup. (source)
  • Coming for MWC? It runs March 1 to 4, 2027, and the Fira's own Wi-Fi was sized for 132,000 devices in 2026. (sources 1, 2)

Our Spain plans for Barcelona

Our Spain plans connect to Orange or Movistar, with 5G where the network and your phone support it. Their internet address is outside Spain, so a few Spanish sites may treat you as being in France, the Netherlands or the UK.

Movistar listed Barcelona among the first 11 Spanish cities on its 5G standalone network in July 2023. (source)

Why 5 GB: Barcelona days mix the metro, the beaches and a day trip or two, and visitors tend to upload more photos and video here. 5 GB covers one to two weeks. A shorter city break fits in 3 GB. Every plan is data only, allows hotspot, and its days start the first time it connects in Spain, not when you install it. Never installed? Full refund within 30 days. See the Spain plans

Arriving at Barcelona-El Prat (BCN)

Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat handled 57,481,990 passengers in 2025, across two terminals that are far apart. Terminal 1, opened in 2009, has room for 33 million passengers a year. (source)

Aena's directory lists a Vodafone shop that sells and activates Vodafone pay-as-you-go SIM cards and eSIMs, in Terminal 1 from 8:00 to 22:00 and in Terminal 2 from 8:00 to 20:00. (source)

Aena places both Vodafone shops on Floor 1, in the passenger-only zone, and the page does not say whether arriving passengers can reach them. Out of about 80 shops listed across the airport, it is the only phone operator. (sources 1, 2)

If you land before 8:00, or the shop is out of reach, the free network is Airport Free Wifi Aena, which needs an email sign-in. (source)

From the airport to the city

Metro Line 9 Sud has stations at both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, and a free shuttle bus links the terminals around the clock. (source)

The R2 Nord commuter train stops only at Terminal 2. If you land at Terminal 1 and want the train, take the shuttle first. (source)

Aena says the only official taxis in Barcelona are black and yellow, and the Terminal 1 rank is on the ground floor. (source)

Uber, Cabify and Bolt each have Aena pick-up points at both terminals. In the city, Bolt offers a category that books Barcelona's own taxis, and Uber's Barcelona page puts local taxis among its ride options too. (sources 1, 2, 3)

The beaches, MWC and other big events

Cellnex installed a permanent network of small antennas, shared by the operators, along 3.5 kilometres of city beaches from Sant Sebastià to Mar Bella, including Barceloneta and Bogatell. It was built for the 2024 America's Cup to reinforce 5G on the seafront. (source)

MWC Barcelona 2027 runs March 1 to 4, 2027 at Fira Gran Via. (source)

For MWC 2026, the Fira's Wi-Fi was sized for up to 132,000 devices, with 2,300 antennas across eight halls. The 2025 edition saw 63,405 different devices and about 20,416 connected at once at the peak, according to Portafolio. (source)

Telefónica opened the ground floor of its Movistar Centre at Plaça de Catalunya as a device showroom for MWC 2026. It is also a place to buy a Movistar prepaid SIM in the city centre. (sources 1, 2)

During MWC and other big events, data is what slows first when the network is busy. Download offline maps of the Fira area before you go. (source)

The metro and day trips

We found no current official source on mobile coverage or 5G in Barcelona's metro tunnels. A January 2026 report said Vodafone had 5G in no Spanish metro and Movistar's 5G had not yet reached underground transport in any Spanish city. (source)

Montserrat trains leave from Plaça d'Espanya: FGC line R5 to Monistrol de Montserrat, then the rack railway up the mountain, about 90 minutes in all. This is an FGC line, not Renfe, so Renfe's PlayRenfe Wi-Fi does not apply, and we found no source on Wi-Fi on board. (sources 1, 2)

OUIGO serves Barcelona Sants and Camp de Tarragona on its high-speed routes, and Renfe's AVE and Avlo trains have free PlayRenfe Wi-Fi with a sign-in using your ticket number. (sources 1, 2)

Buying a Spanish SIM in Barcelona instead

Spanish law requires operators to record the identity of every prepaid SIM buyer, including the number and type of ID, so take your passport. (source)

On October 14, 2026 Movistar's prepaid page listed plans from €10 for 28 days with 60 GB, sold in any Movistar store. The Vodafone shop at El Prat sells Vodafone pay-as-you-go SIMs, but we could not read Vodafone's prices on the day we checked. (sources 1, 2)

How much data for Barcelona?

Barcelona visitors use the metro, ride apps and maps a lot, and share more beach and city photos than in most places. These sizes assume a city stay with a day trip.

Our rough guide to data use in Barcelona
Your tripPlan that fits
A long weekend1 GB, 7 days
A week, mostly in the city3 GB, 30 days
One to two weeks, or MWC5 GB, 30 days
A laptop on hotspot, or a month10 GB, 30 days

A rough guide from the plan sizes, not a measurement. Video calls and streaming use the most data; maps and messages use little. You can add data from your order page if you run low.

Does your US phone plan already cover Barcelona?

Spain is not included in most US plans the way Mexico and Canada are. On those plans, every day you use your phone in Barcelona adds a daily charge, so a week-long trip adds up quickly.

Setting up before you fly to Barcelona

  1. 1At home, check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked.
  2. 2Install the eSIM on home Wi-Fi before you fly. Its days start when it first connects in Spain, not at install.
  3. 3On landing at El Prat, turn on the eSIM line and its data roaming, and turn data roaming off on your US line.
  4. 4If it hasn't connected by the time you reach the terminal, use Airport Free Wifi Aena and our landing checklist. (source)

Questions about data in Barcelona

Can I buy a SIM card at Barcelona airport?

Aena lists a Vodafone shop that sells pay-as-you-go SIMs and eSIMs in Terminal 1, open 8:00 to 22:00, and Terminal 2, open 8:00 to 20:00. Both are listed in the passenger-only zone, and Aena does not say whether arriving passengers can reach them. (source)

Which metro or train goes to Barcelona airport Terminal 1?

Metro Line 9 Sud stops at both terminals. The R2 Nord train stops only at Terminal 2, and a free 24-hour shuttle links the two. (sources 1, 2)

Is there 5G on Barcelona's beaches?

Yes. A shared network of small antennas covers 3.5 kilometres of city beaches, from Sant Sebastià to Mar Bella, and was built to reinforce 5G there. (source)

Will my eSIM work during Mobile World Congress?

Yes, but the Fira and the streets around it are crowded, and data slows first when networks are busy. The Fira runs its own large Wi-Fi network for visitors. (sources 1, 2)

Quick Compatibility Check

Two checks before you buy:

1Your phone supports eSIM

Apple iPhone: iPhone XS, XR and later, including SE (3rd gen). SE (2nd gen): Apple's pages disagree, so check for an EID. Most iPhones from China mainland don't support eSIM.
Samsung Galaxy: S20 series and newer, Z Fold and Z Flip models, and some A models depending on region. Google Pixel: Pixel 4 and newer, and some Pixel 3 and 3a models.
Any phone: if Settings shows an “EID” (iPhone: General > About; Pixel: About phone > SIM status), your phone supports eSIM.

2Your phone is unlocked

iPhone, 10 seconds: Settings > General > About > Carrier Lock should say “No SIM restrictions”. A locked iPhone stops at “eSIM Not Supported”.
Android: Samsung shows it under Connections > More connection settings. Pixel or another phone from a carrier: check with your carrier.
