Cancún eSIM guide: the airport, the Hotel Zone and day trips

What works for data in Cancún: what the airport directory lists (no carrier store), where Telcel's six Cancún stores are, coverage in Quintana Roo, ride apps at the airport, the Tren Maya, the Isla Mujeres ferry and Chichén Itzá.

Last checked October 14, 2026 · Sources and dates

RoamClean sells Mexico eSIMs, and our plans are on this page. The facts about Cancún come from the airport, carrier and transit pages listed under Sources, each with the date we read it. Where you may not need an eSIM at all, we say so.

The short answer

  • Check your US plan first: every AT&T unlimited plan and every Verizon Unlimited plan includes Mexico, so many visitors to Cancún need nothing extra. (sources 1, 2, 3, 4)
  • Don't count on buying a SIM at the airport. ASUR's directory for Cancún airport lists no mobile carrier store, and Telcel's own list of its six Cancún stores puts none at the airport or in the Hotel Zone. (sources 1, 2)
  • Our Mexico eSIM connects to Telcel and AT&T, and by their own maps both reach about 79% of Quintana Roo's population with 5G. (source)
  • Using Uber from the airport? Inside the airport it books reserved taxis, not private cars. (source)

Our Mexico plans for Cancún

Our Mexico plans connect to Telcel or AT&T México, with 5G where the network and your phone support it. They use an internet address outside Mexico, in Singapore, so a few Mexican sites may treat you as abroad.

Mexico's telecom regulator, the CRT, publishes each operator's own coverage maps by state. For Quintana Roo they show 4G reaching 95.95% of the population on Telcel and 94.70% on AT&T, and 5G reaching 79.10% on Telcel and 79.15% on AT&T, the second-highest state share for both. (source)

5 GB30 days$12.99$2.60

Why 3 GB: Resort and hotel Wi-Fi covers a lot of a Cancún stay, so your eSIM mostly handles maps, ride apps, messages and photos on day trips. 3 GB covers a week for most visitors. Take 5 GB for two weeks or for video calls. Every plan is data only, allows hotspot, and its days start the first time it connects in Mexico, not when you install it. Never installed? Arriving at Cancún airport (CUN)

Cancún airport handled 1,607,088 passengers in September 2026 and 20,882,658 from January to September, 13,779,382 of them international, according to ASUR, the company that runs it. (source)

ASUR's own services directory for Cancún lists banks, currency exchange, baggage wrapping, tourist information and TELMEX landline service in Terminals 2, 3 and 4. It lists no mobile carrier store and no SIM seller. Some of the contact details on that page look like placeholders, so the directory may be out of date. (source)

The shop directory lists MOBO, a phone accessories store, in Terminal 2. The page does not say it sells SIM cards. (source)

ASUR publishes no Wi-Fi terms on its Cancún pages. An unofficial airport information site says the free network is CUN Wi-Fi, run by Prodigy Mobile, with a 60-minute limit on sponsored connections. (source)

The same unofficial site says Terminal 2 handles domestic and international flights, Terminals 3 and 4 international flights, and a free shuttle links the terminals with waits of up to 20 minutes. (source)

Where to buy a Telcel SIM in Cancún

Telcel's April 2026 store directory for Quintana Roo lists six customer service centers in Cancún: Cancún Mall (11:00 to 21:00), Cancún I Crucero on Av. Tulum (9:00 to 18:00), Cancún III Chichén on Av. Chichén Itzá (9:00 to 18:00), Cancún IV Gran Plaza on Av. Nichupté (10:00 to 21:00), Cancún V Malecón at Las Américas on Av. Bonampak (11:00 to 21:00), and Cancún VI Express Huayacán (9:00 to 19:00), all open daily. (source)

All six are in the city's downtown districts. None is at the airport, and none has an address on Blvd. Kukulcán, the Hotel Zone road, so staying in the Hotel Zone means a taxi ride to buy a SIM. (source)

On October 14, 2026, Telcel's package catalog listed prepaid Amigo Sin Límite packages from MXN 50 for 7 days with 500 MB, up to MXN 500 for 30 days with 8 GB, bought by text message. (source)

A Mexican SIM bought as a visitor must be registered with your passport under Mexico's 2026 phone registry. Roaming on your home line, or on a foreign eSIM like ours, needs no registration today. (source)

Getting around Cancún

Uber says its app works in Cancún at any hour, with UberX, UberXL, taxis and rides reserved up to 30 days ahead. Its airport page lists Taxi, UberX and Reserve, and warns that early or late flights may mean longer waits for a driver. (sources 1, 2)

Xataka México reported that from July 30, 2025 Uber offers reserved taxi-type rides inside Cancún airport with a local company, Flex Eco Taxi, booked up to 30 days ahead with your flight number, and that private cars are not part of it. (source)

The Tren Maya restarted its Cancún to Playa del Carmen trains on August 15, 2026 from Estación Cancún Aeropuerto, with departures at 06:45 and 10:30, a trip of about 49 minutes and a stop at Puerto Morelos. A connecting service, Tren Maya Conecta, links the stations with the airport and the hotel zones. (source)

Quintana Roo's tourism ministry and GigNet opened free public Wi-Fi at Playa Delfines and Kilómetro Cero in the Hotel Zone in October 2023. The Playa Delfines module covers 36,000 square meters and serves more than 2,500 devices a day, according to Riviera Maya News. (source)

Isla Mujeres and Chichén Itzá

Ultramar runs ferries to Isla Mujeres from three Cancún departure points: its Puerto Juárez terminal on Av. López Portillo, Playa Tortugas at km 6.5 of Blvd. Kukulcán, and Playa Caracol at km 9.5. (source)

Ultramar sends tickets by email, says they are non-refundable and valid for six months on the route bought, and asks you to arrive 30 minutes before departure. Its Puerto Juárez terminal lists internet service among its amenities. (sources 1, 2)

Chichén Itzá is in Yucatán state, where the operators' maps show 4G reaching 96.41% of people on Telcel and 92.85% on AT&T, but 5G only 46.59% and 40.08%. Expect 4G on the way there. (source)

INAH, which runs Mexico's archaeological sites, has said phones are not banned there and there is no charge for bringing one into Chichén Itzá. A MXN 60 fee applies only to filming for commercial purposes. (source)

How much data for Cancún?

In Cancún most visitors are on hotel Wi-Fi for part of every day, so the eSIM covers the beach, the ferry, ride apps and day trips. These sizes assume that pattern.

Our rough guide to data use in Cancún
Your tripPlan that fits
A long weekend at a resort1 GB, 7 days
A week with a day trip or two3 GB, 30 days
Two weeks, or video calls home5 GB, 30 days
You would rather not count gigabytesDay pass, 1 GB a day

A rough guide from the plan sizes, not a measurement. Video calls and streaming use the most data; maps and messages use little. You can add data from your order page if you run low.

Does your US phone plan already cover Cancún?

Mexico is part of most US phone plans. If the table shows your plan includes Mexico, you may not need an eSIM in Cancún at all. Those most likely to need one are T-Mobile Essentials customers, who get only low-speed data in Mexico, and anyone whose phone plan is not from the US.

Setting up before you fly to Cancún

  1. 1At home, check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked.
  2. 2Install the eSIM on home Wi-Fi before you fly. Its days start when it first connects in Mexico.
  3. 3When you land at CUN, turn on the eSIM line and its data roaming, and turn data roaming off on your US line.
  4. 4If it hasn't connected by immigration, use the airport Wi-Fi to open our landing checklist before you head out to transport.

Is there a Telcel store in the Cancún Hotel Zone?

Not in Telcel's April 2026 directory. None of its six Cancún stores has an address on Blvd. Kukulcán; all are in the downtown districts. (source)

An unofficial airport site says the network is CUN Wi-Fi, with a 60-minute limit on sponsored connections. ASUR, which runs the airport, publishes no Wi-Fi terms on its Cancún pages. (source)

Can I use Uber from Cancún airport?

Yes, for reserved taxi-type rides with a local company, booked with your flight number, according to Xataka México. Uber's airport page lists Taxi, UberX and Reserve. (sources 1, 2)

Quick Compatibility Check

Two checks before you buy:

1Your phone supports eSIM

Apple iPhone: iPhone XS, XR and later, including SE (3rd gen). SE (2nd gen): Apple's pages disagree, so check for an EID. Most iPhones from China mainland don't support eSIM.
Samsung Galaxy: S20 series and newer, Z Fold and Z Flip models, and some A models depending on region. Google Pixel: Pixel 4 and newer, and some Pixel 3 and 3a models.
Any phone: if Settings shows an “EID” (iPhone: General > About; Pixel: About phone > SIM status), your phone supports eSIM.

2Your phone is unlocked

iPhone, 10 seconds: Settings > General > About > Carrier Lock should say “No SIM restrictions”. A locked iPhone stops at “eSIM Not Supported”.
Android: Samsung shows it under Connections > More connection settings. Pixel or another phone from a carrier: check with your carrier.
