Playa del Carmen eSIM guide, with Cozumel and Tulum

What works for data in Playa del Carmen, Cozumel and Tulum: getting there from Cancún airport by ADO or Tren Maya, the Telcel stores in each town, the Cozumel ferry, cruise ship networks, ride apps and free Wi-Fi plans for Quinta Avenida.

Last checked October 14, 2026 · Sources and dates

RoamClean sells Mexico eSIMs, and our plans are on this page. The facts about Playa del Carmen come from the airport, carrier and transit pages listed under Sources, each with the date we read it. Where you may not need an eSIM at all, we say so.

The short answer

  • Playa del Carmen has no airport of its own. You arrive through Cancún, so have data working when you land there, for the bus or train ride south. (source)
  • Telcel lists two stores in Playa del Carmen, one in Cozumel and one in Tulum, so a Mexican SIM is possible in each town during opening hours. (source)
  • Visiting Cozumel on a cruise? Ships switch on their own costly network once at sea; in port your phone uses land networks, which is where our Mexico eSIM works. (source)
  • Uber has no city page for Playa del Carmen, so don't count on ride apps there. Taxis and the ADO bus are the dependable options. (sources 1, 2)

Our Mexico plans for Playa del Carmen

Our Mexico plans connect to Telcel or AT&T México on land, with 5G where the network and your phone support it. They do not work on a cruise ship's onboard network. Their internet address is in Singapore.

Playa del Carmen, Cozumel and Tulum are all in Quintana Roo, the state our Cancún guide covers in detail: by the operators' own maps, about 79% of its people are within Telcel and AT&T 5G coverage. (source)

Why 3 GB: Between the ferry, cenotes, beach clubs and dinner on Quinta Avenida, most visitors use data for maps, messages and photos. 3 GB covers a week. Take 5 GB for two weeks or for daily video calls. Every plan is data only, allows hotspot, and its days start the first time it connects in Mexico, not when you install it. Never installed? Getting to Playa del Carmen from Cancún airport

ADO buses leave Cancún airport from Terminals 2, 3 and 4, not Terminal 1, for the Playa del Carmen ADO station on Av. Benito Juárez, near Quinta Avenida and the Cozumel ferry dock. (source)

ADO lists the fare at about MXN 270 one way, up to 30 departures a day, and a trip of about 1 hour 15 minutes, with the ticket sent by email and shown on your phone. It mentions Wi-Fi only on its ADO GL and Diamante services, not on this route. (source)

The Tren Maya runs from Playa del Carmen to Estación Cancún Aeropuerto at 07:47 and 12:00, about 49 minutes, where Tren Maya Conecta links to the airport. (source)

To change a Tren Maya booking online, its FAQ says you enter your booking or ticket number and the mobile number you gave when you bought it. If that was your home number, keep that line able to receive texts. (source)

Telcel stores and local packages

Telcel's April 2026 Quintana Roo directory lists two stores in Playa del Carmen: one in the Centro Maya shopping center on Carretera Federal 307, open daily 10:00 to 19:00, and Playa del Carmen II on Av. Kantenah, open daily 9:00 to 18:00. (source)

The same directory lists one Telcel store in Cozumel, at Av. Benito Juárez and 35 Av. Sur, and one in Tulum, on Av. Tulum in the town center, both open daily 9:00 to 18:00. (source)

On October 14, 2026, Telcel's catalog listed data-only Internet packages from MXN 100 for 15 days with 1.8 GB up to MXN 500 for 30 days with 10 GB. A Mexican SIM must be registered with your passport before it works for more than emergency calls. (sources 1, 2, 3)

The ferry to Cozumel, and cruise visits

Ultramar's Cozumel ferry leaves from Terminal Marítima NAVEGA on Av. Benito Juárez in Playa del Carmen and arrives at Terminal Marítima San Miguel in Cozumel. Ultramar says the bus station is 100 meters from the pier, so you can walk from the ADO bus to the boat. (source)

Ultramar's list of what is on board names a device charging station, a snack bar and air-conditioned decks. It does not list Wi-Fi, so plan on your own data for the crossing. (source)

Cozumel sees heavy cruise traffic: News in America, quoting the port authority, reported 1,300 cruise ship calls and 4,732,250 cruise passengers in 2025. (source)

Verizon says a ship's own cellular service turns on 12 miles after leaving the dock, and its Cruise Daily Pass costs $20 per line per day with 0.5 GB of high-speed data. Background data can start a session unless cellular data is off. (source)

In port and ashore, a phone uses Mexican land networks, where your US plan's Mexico allowance or our Mexico eSIM applies. Turn cellular data off before the ship sails to avoid the onboard charge. (source)

Getting around and free Wi-Fi

Uber has no city page for Playa del Carmen; the address returned a not-found page when we checked. Its Cancún page links to Playa del Carmen routes but does not say Uber runs rides within Playa del Carmen. (source)

Riviera Maya News reported in November 2024 that the state tourism ministry registered DiDi as a tourist transport service in Quintana Roo. The article does not confirm DiDi rides in Playa del Carmen. (source)

The state tourism ministry and GigNet listed Parque Fundadores and Quinta Avenida in Playa del Carmen for the next phase of free public Wi-Fi, with no opening date given. (source)

How much data for Playa del Carmen?

Playa del Carmen, Cozumel and Tulum trips mix beach days on hotel Wi-Fi with ferries, buses and cenotes where you rely on your own data. These sizes assume that.

Our rough guide to data use in Playa del Carmen
Your tripPlan that fits
A long weekend1 GB, 7 days
A week with Cozumel or Tulum3 GB, 30 days
Two weeks, or video calls home5 GB, 30 days
You would rather not count gigabytesDay pass, 1 GB a day

A rough guide from the plan sizes, not a measurement. Video calls and streaming use the most data; maps and messages use little. You can add data from your order page if you run low.

Does your US phone plan already cover Playa del Carmen?

Mexico is part of most US phone plans, on land. If the table shows your plan includes Mexico, you may not need an eSIM in Playa del Carmen. That allowance does not cover a cruise ship's onboard network.

Setting up before you fly to Playa del Carmen

  1. 1At home, check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked.
  2. 2Install the eSIM on home Wi-Fi before you fly or sail. Its days start when it first connects to a network in Mexico.
  3. 3On arrival in Cancún, or ashore in Cozumel, turn on the eSIM line and its data roaming, and turn data roaming off on your US line.
  4. 4On a cruise, turn cellular data off before the ship leaves port, and back on ashore. (source)

Ultramar's list of what is on board names a charging station, a snack bar and air-conditioned decks, but not Wi-Fi. (source)

Quick Compatibility Check

Two checks before you buy:

1Your phone supports eSIM

Apple iPhone: iPhone XS, XR and later, including SE (3rd gen). SE (2nd gen): Apple's pages disagree, so check for an EID. Most iPhones from China mainland don't support eSIM.
Samsung Galaxy: S20 series and newer, Z Fold and Z Flip models, and some A models depending on region. Google Pixel: Pixel 4 and newer, and some Pixel 3 and 3a models.
Any phone: if Settings shows an “EID” (iPhone: General > About; Pixel: About phone > SIM status), your phone supports eSIM.

2Your phone is unlocked

iPhone, 10 seconds: Settings > General > About > Carrier Lock should say “No SIM restrictions”. A locked iPhone stops at “eSIM Not Supported”.
Android: Samsung shows it under Connections > More connection settings. Pixel or another phone from a carrier: check with your carrier.
