Mexico City eSIM guide: the airport, free Wi-Fi and the Metro

What works for data in Mexico City: the Telcel and Movistar stores inside AICM and their hours, the airport's two-hour free Wi-Fi, the Aerotrén rule, Metro and Metrobús from the terminals, 5G coverage, the city's free hotspots and Metro dead zones.

RoamClean sells Mexico eSIMs, and our plans are on this page. The facts about Mexico City come from the airport, carrier and transit pages listed under Sources, each with the date we read it. Where you may not need an eSIM at all, we say so.

The short answer

  • Check your US plan first: Mexico is included on every AT&T unlimited plan and every Verizon Unlimited plan. (sources 1, 2, 3, 4)
  • AICM, Mexico City's main airport, lists Telcel stores in both terminals and a Movistar store in Terminal 1, so you can buy a Mexican SIM on arrival during opening hours. (source)
  • 4G covers all of Mexico City on every operator's map, but 5G reaches only about half the population on Telcel and 41% on AT&T. (source)
  • Expect no signal on parts of Metro Lines 1 and 12, according to a May 2026 report. (source)

Our Mexico plans for Mexico City

Our Mexico plans connect to Telcel or AT&T México, with 5G where the network and your phone support it. Their internet address is in Singapore, so a few Mexican sites may treat you as abroad.

The CRT's report on the operators' own coverage maps shows 4G reaching 100% of Mexico City's population on Telcel, AT&T and Movistar, while 5G reaches 50.82% on Telcel and 40.74% on AT&T, much less than in Quintana Roo. (source)

Telcel's business page lists CDMX first among the 100 cities with its 5G network. (source)

AT&T México says its service can be affected inside buildings, underground, in elevators and where unusually many people gather, which describes a lot of Mexico City. (source)

RoamClean Mexico plans, prices in US dollars

1 GB7 days$4.49$4.49

5 GBour pick for Mexico City30 days$12.99$2.60

Why 5 GB: Mexico City is huge, and visitors use ride apps, maps and the Metro all day, often with patchy signal underground. 5 GB covers one to two weeks without counting. A short stay fits in 3 GB. Every plan is data only, allows hotspot, and its days start the first time it connects in Mexico, not when you install it. Never installed? Full refund within 30 days. See the Mexico plans

Arriving at Mexico City airport (MEX)

AICM's own directory lists a Telcel store on the upper floor of Terminal 1 (local CF7), open daily 9:00 to 19:00, and a Telcel store on the ground floor of Terminal 2 (local ALL32), open daily 7:00 to 22:00. (source)

The same directory lists a Movistar store on the upper floor of Terminal 1 (local CF6), open daily 9:00 to 20:00. It lists no AT&T store. It also lists many MOBO phone shops in both terminals, one in Terminal 2 open 24 hours, but does not say whether they sell SIM cards. (source)

None of these pages publishes an airport SIM price. If you land after 19:00 in Terminal 1, the Telcel store there is closed. (source)

The free Wi-Fi network is #AICM_FREE_WIFI in both terminals, with sessions of up to two hours, after which you accept the terms again. AICM says it uses 800 Wi-Fi 7 antennas, each serving up to 200 users, from the public halls to the final departure lounges. (source)

The Aerotrén between Terminals 1 and 2 is free and runs daily from 05:00 to 23:00, but it needs a boarding pass. Arriving in Terminal 2 and wanting the Movistar store in Terminal 1 means ground transport. (source)

From the airport to the city

The Metro station Terminal Aérea is at Terminal 1, on Boulevard Puerto Aéreo. (source)

Metrobús boards at Terminal 1 door 7 and Terminal 2 door 2. You pay with a Metrobús smart card sold at machines in both terminals, and it runs Monday to Saturday from 4:30 to 24:00 and from 5:00 on Sundays and holidays. (source)

AICM lists its authorized taxi companies, including TaxiRide, Yellow Cab, Sitio 300, Nueva Imagen, Confort, Porto Taxi and Aerotaxi. (source)

Uber says its app works in Mexico City at any hour, taxis included. Its airport page lists UberX, Comfort, Priority, Black, UberXL and Wait & Save, and a 158 cm total-size limit for checked bags. (sources 1, 2)

Free Wi-Fi in Mexico City

Mexico City's official tourism site says the city has some 30,000 free Wi-Fi hotspots reaching 1,600 neighborhoods, with no limits on time or content. It says the hotspot that set a Guinness record in 2021 is opposite the Angel of Independence. (source)

Infobae reported in December 2023 that 226 Metrobús stations on all lines have free Wi-Fi on the CFE Telecomunicaciones para Todos network. (source)

Free Wi-Fi is a useful backup, but it means joining a new network at every stop. A data plan keeps ride apps and maps working while you walk between them.

Signal on the Metro

Eje Central reported on May 3, 2026 that mobile data does not work in the underground part of Metro Line 12, and that free Wi-Fi does not run in any of its 20 stations. (source)

The same report says the signal on the renovated part of Line 1 may be very weak or absent, and that the CDMX METRO WIFI network may not work reliably until the works end. On Line 4 there is no free Wi-Fi, but mobile data works. (source)

The Metro's own websites were unreachable when we checked, so these points come from the press. Load your route and destination before you go underground on Lines 1 and 12.

Buying a Mexican SIM instead

On October 14, 2026, AT&T México's prepaid page listed data recharges from 100 MB for MXN 10 for one day up to 6 GB for MXN 300 for 30 days, and said a new prepaid SIM needs a first recharge of MXN 50 or more at an AT&T store. (source)

Its prepaid terms slow data to 400 kbps after 500 MB in a day, and to 128 kbps after 3 GB in a month. (source)

Any Mexican SIM you buy must be registered with your passport under the 2026 registry. Since January 9, 2026, a new SIM works only for emergency calls until it is registered. Our eSIM is foreign and needs no registration today. (sources 1, 2)

How much data for Mexico City?

Mexico City visitors spend the day on ride apps, maps, restaurant searches and the Metro, with long stretches away from hotel Wi-Fi. These sizes assume that.

Our rough guide to data use in Mexico City
Your tripPlan that fits
A weekend1 GB, 7 days
A week in the city3 GB, 30 days
One to two weeks, or a lot of ride apps and video5 GB, 30 days
You would rather not count gigabytesDay pass, 1 GB a day

A rough guide from the plan sizes, not a measurement. Video calls and streaming use the most data; maps and messages use little. You can add data from your order page if you run low.

Does your US phone plan already cover Mexico City?

Mexico is part of most US phone plans. If the table shows your plan includes Mexico, you may not need an eSIM in Mexico City. Those most likely to need one are T-Mobile Essentials customers, who get only low-speed data in Mexico, and visitors whose plan is not from the US.

Setting up before you fly to Mexico City

  1. 1At home, check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked. A Telcel SIM from the airport store needs an unlocked phone too.
  2. 2Install the eSIM on home Wi-Fi before you fly. Its days start when it first connects in Mexico.
  3. 3When you land at MEX, turn on the eSIM line and its data roaming, and turn data roaming off on your US line.
  4. 4If it hasn't connected yet, join #AICM_FREE_WIFI, which gives you two hours, and open our landing checklist. (source)

Quick Compatibility Check

Two checks before you buy:

1Your phone supports eSIM

Apple iPhone: iPhone XS, XR and later, including SE (3rd gen). SE (2nd gen): Apple's pages disagree, so check for an EID. Most iPhones from China mainland don't support eSIM.
Samsung Galaxy: S20 series and newer, Z Fold and Z Flip models, and some A models depending on region. Google Pixel: Pixel 4 and newer, and some Pixel 3 and 3a models.
Any phone: if Settings shows an “EID” (iPhone: General > About; Pixel: About phone > SIM status), your phone supports eSIM.

2Your phone is unlocked

iPhone, 10 seconds: Settings > General > About > Carrier Lock should say “No SIM restrictions”. A locked iPhone stops at “eSIM Not Supported”.
Android: Samsung shows it under Connections > More connection settings. Pixel or another phone from a carrier: check with your carrier.
