Toronto eSIM guide: Pearson airport, the subway and Niagara Falls

What works for data in Toronto: the Rogers network our Canada plans use, the SIM counters at Pearson, cell service on the TTC subway, free Wi-Fi on UP Express and GO trains, and the border near Niagara Falls.

Last checked October 14, 2026 · Sources and dates

RoamClean sells Canada eSIMs, and our plans are on this page. The facts about Toronto come from the airport, carrier and transit pages listed under Sources, each with the date we read it. Where you may not need an eSIM at all, we say so.

The short answer

  • Check your US plan first. Every AT&T unlimited plan and every Verizon Unlimited plan includes Canada, so many US visitors to Toronto need nothing extra. (sources 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7)
  • If your plan charges for Canada, or you are visiting from outside the US, our Canada eSIM runs on Rogers and is data only.
  • Want a Canadian phone number? Chatr sells prepaid SIMs and eSIMs at counters in Pearson's Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 arrivals halls. (source)
  • On the subway, the TTC says there is cell service at every station on Lines 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6 and in some of the tunnels. (source)
  • Going to Niagara Falls? Near the border a phone can pick a US tower, and our Canada plan works only in Canada. (source)

Our Canada plans for Toronto

Our Canada plans connect to Rogers, with 5G where Rogers has it. Rogers says its coverage maps are approximate and that a 5G connection depends on the phone, the signal, the terrain and how busy the network is. (source)

In May 2026 Rogers said it had added network equipment at Pearson airport, Union Station and some TTC subway stations, as part of $22 million in 5G+ upgrades around BMO Field for the World Cup. It also said it parked temporary cell sites on wheels in busy downtown areas. (source)

Our Canada plans show a US internet address, so a few Canadian websites and apps may treat you as being in the US.

RoamClean Canada plans, prices in US dollars

1 GB7 days$5.99$5.99
3 GBour pick for Toronto30 days$7.99$2.66
5 GB30 days$11.49$2.30
10 GB30 days$16.99$1.70

Why 3 GB: A week of maps, transit apps, ride booking and messages in Toronto fits in 3 GB for most visitors, and free Wi-Fi on UP Express and GO trains takes some of the load. Take 5 GB if you will stream or share data with a laptop. Every plan is data only, allows hotspot, and its days start the first time it connects in Canada, not when you install it. Never installed? Arriving at Toronto Pearson (YYZ)

Pearson has free Wi-Fi in its terminals. Pick the network called Toronto Pearson Public Wi-Fi, accept the terms on the page that opens and choose Connect. The airport's page lists no time limit, which makes it a good place to download offline maps if you skipped that at home. (source)

Chatr sells prepaid SIM cards and eSIMs at two counters on the Arrivals level. The Terminal 1 counter is next to the CIBC kiosk and opens daily from 6 a.m. to midnight. The Terminal 3 counter is beside Tim Hortons and opens daily from 9 a.m. to midnight. (source)

Chatr tells buyers to bring a passport or other government ID, because it may be needed to register the SIM. It also says the phone must be unlocked, which is the same requirement our eSIM has. (source)

Chatr's plans run on the Rogers network, and its plans page describes the data as Fast 4G. They are monthly plans, so a five-day visit still pays for a month. What they add is a Canadian phone number, which our data-only eSIM does not have. (source)

From the airport to downtown

The UP Express train links Pearson and Union Station, and GO Transit says its trains have free Wi-Fi. The same network, GO Wi-Fi Plus, runs on all GO trains and GO buses and at most GO stations and bus terminals. (source)

To connect, join GO Wi-Fi Plus and open gopluswifi.com in your browser. It is a handy backup if your eSIM is still being set up when you board. (source)

Uber says you can request rides around Toronto at any hour and has a separate pickup page for Pearson. Booking a ride and watching the car arrive both need data on the spot, which is the moment a working plan matters most. (source)

Using your phone on the TTC subway

The TTC says riders can now get cell service at all stations on Lines 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6 and in a number of tunnels, to talk, text, stream and reach emergency services. It publishes a map of where 5G works, dated July 2026. (source)

The TTC does not say every tunnel is covered, so expect short gaps between some stations. Load your route before you go underground. (source)

The TTC also says you can call 9-1-1 anywhere in the subway where 5G is available, on any carrier. (source)

For the history: in April 2025 Rogers said the old subway network reached only 25% of the tunnels. It set targets of 80% of tunnels by the end of 2025 and all 75 stations and tunnels by the end of 2026. Those were targets, so treat the TTC's map as the current picture. (source)

A day trip to Niagara Falls

GO Transit runs trains to Niagara Falls GO station, at the north end of the city, seven days a week, and says those trains have GO Wi-Fi Plus on board. (source)

Niagara Falls sits on the US border. A US carrier's support page explains that a phone near the border connects to the strongest signal, even when the tower is in the other country. (source)

That matters for our Canada plans, which work in Canada only. If your phone picks a US tower, the Canada eSIM has no data until it is back on a Canadian network. You can try choosing Rogers by hand in your phone's network settings. If you will cross to the US side, our North America plan covers Canada and the US on one eSIM.

How much data for Toronto?

Toronto has free Wi-Fi at Pearson and on UP Express and GO trains, so a city visit uses less than you might expect. These sizes assume maps, transit and ride apps, messages and photos.

Our rough guide to data use in Toronto
Your tripPlan that fits
A weekend, or a short work trip1 GB, 7 days
A week in the city3 GB, 30 days
One to two weeks, or video calls home every day5 GB, 30 days
A laptop on hotspot, or a month10 GB, 30 days

A rough guide from the plan sizes, not a measurement. Video calls and streaming use the most data; maps and messages use little. You can add data from your order page if you run low.

Does your US phone plan already cover Toronto?

Canada is part of many US phone plans. If the table shows your plan includes Canada, you may not need an eSIM in Toronto at all. The visitors most likely to need one are those on T-Mobile Essentials, which includes only low-speed data in Canada, and anyone whose phone plan is not from the US.

Setting up before you fly to Toronto

  1. 1At home, check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked. A locked phone will refuse our eSIM and Chatr's SIM alike.
  2. 2Install the eSIM on home Wi-Fi before you fly. Its days start when it first connects in Canada, so installing a week early costs nothing.
  3. 3When you land at Pearson, turn on the eSIM line and its data roaming, and turn data roaming off on your US line so it does not use data too.
  4. 4If the eSIM has not connected by the baggage hall, join Toronto Pearson Public Wi-Fi, which has no time limit, and follow our landing checklist. (source)

Questions about data in Toronto

Can I buy a SIM card at Toronto Pearson airport?

Yes. Chatr has prepaid SIM and eSIM counters on the Arrivals level of Terminal 1, open 6 a.m. to midnight, and Terminal 3, open 9 a.m. to midnight. Bring a passport or other government ID and an unlocked phone. Its plans are monthly and include a Canadian phone number. (sources 1, 2)

Does my phone work in the Toronto subway?

Mostly. The TTC says there is cell service at all stations on Lines 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6 and in a number of tunnels, with 5G mapped as of July 2026. Some stretches between stations may still have no signal. (source)

Is there free Wi-Fi on the train from Pearson to downtown Toronto?

Yes. GO Transit says UP Express trains have free Wi-Fi, on the same GO Wi-Fi Plus network as GO trains and buses. (source)

Will a Canada eSIM work at Niagara Falls?

On the Canadian side, yes, as long as your phone stays on a Canadian network. Near the border a phone can connect to a US tower instead, and our Canada plan has no data there. Our North America plan covers both countries. North America plans (source)

Do I need a Toronto eSIM with a phone number?

Only if you need a Canadian number. Our eSIM is data only, and calls go through apps like WhatsApp or through your own US line. For a local number, Chatr's counters at Pearson sell prepaid plans that include one. (source)

Quick Compatibility Check

Two checks before you buy:

1Your phone supports eSIM

Apple iPhone: iPhone XS, XR and later, including SE (3rd gen). SE (2nd gen): Apple's pages disagree, so check for an EID. Most iPhones from China mainland don't support eSIM.
Samsung Galaxy: S20 series and newer, Z Fold and Z Flip models, and some A models depending on region. Google Pixel: Pixel 4 and newer, and some Pixel 3 and 3a models.
Any phone: if Settings shows an “EID” (iPhone: General > About; Pixel: About phone > SIM status), your phone supports eSIM.

2Your phone is unlocked

iPhone, 10 seconds: Settings > General > About > Carrier Lock should say “No SIM restrictions”. A locked iPhone stops at “eSIM Not Supported”.
Android: Samsung shows it under Connections > More connection settings. Pixel or another phone from a carrier: check with your carrier.
